Low Cost Psychology Program

Child & Adolescent Psychology in Croydon

Our Low-Cost Psychology Program provides a supported block of Psychology sessions for children and young people who may benefit from focused, short-term support.

The program includes a parent intake and up to six Psychology sessions at $75 per session, provided by Luna Rindt, a provisional psychologist from Monash University's Master of Educational and Developmental Psychology program.

Appointments are currently available with Luna, including limited after school times

Could this program be a good fit?

Children and young people come to Psychology for lots of different reasons. This program may be helpful if:

  • They’ve been worrying more than usual or getting stuck on particular worries.
  • Big feelings are getting harder to manage.
  • Their confidence has taken a knock or they’re being particularly hard on themselves.
  • Friendships or social situations have become tricky.
  • School has become stressful or something happening at school is affecting them.
  • They’re adjusting to a change or difficult experience.
  • There’s something they’d like help working through, but you’re not necessarily looking for ongoing therapy.
  • You know they could use some support, but you’re not quite sure what they need yet.

You don’t need to know exactly what the problem is or what kind of support to ask for before getting started. The parent intake gives us a chance to understand what’s happening and work out whether this program is likely to be a good fit.

How does it work?

1. Start with an intake

The first appointment is a parent-only intake session. This gives you an opportunity to talk openly about what’s been happening, what you’ve noticed and what you’d most like your child to get from Psychology.

It also gives us an opportunity to make sure short-term support through this program is appropriate for your child or teen.

2. Your child meets Luna

Luna then works individually with your child or young person over a block of up to six sessions.

What those sessions look like will depend on their age, what they’re seeking support with and the goals you’ve discussed together.

3. We work towards something useful

The program is designed to be focused and short term, rather than open-ended ongoing therapy.

The focus might be understanding and managing worries, navigating friendships, building confidence, developing strategies for big emotions, adjusting to change or working through something particularly difficult happening at the moment.

4. We talk about what comes next

Some children may finish the program with strategies they can continue using beyond their sessions. Others may benefit from further or different support.

If your child would benefit from more ongoing Psychology support, Luna will work with you and our broader Psychology team to plan a transition to an appropriate clinician. If a different type of support would be more helpful, we’ll talk through those options with you too.

Meet Luna

Luna is a Provisional Psychologist completing her Master of Educational and Developmental Psychology with a particular interest in supporting children and young people.

Luna believes therapy starts with creating a space where young people feel safe to be themselves. She particularly enjoys supporting children and adolescents with emotions, coping and confidence, and takes the time to get to know each young person rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

Families often describe Luna as compassionate, curious and collaborative. She’s also a self-described “bit of a nerd” who loves video games, tabletop role-playing games and board games — interests that can make for some easy common ground with young people.

What does it cost?

Sessions through the Low-Cost Psychology Program are $75 per session.

The program includes:

1 parent-only intake appointment
followed by
up to 6 individual Psychology sessions

Medicare rebates are not available for sessions with Provisional Psychologists.

Self-managed and plan-managed NDIS funding may be used where the support is appropriate to the participant’s goals and funding arrangements.

Is a short-term program right for everyone?

No, and that's completely OK. This program has been designed to provide focused, short-term Psychology support and won't be the right fit for every child or every situation.

That's one of the reasons we start with a parent intake. It gives us an opportunity to understand what your child needs and whether the program is likely to be a good fit.

If it becomes clear that your child would benefit from more ongoing support, Luna will work with you and our broader Psychology team to plan a transition to an appropriate clinician, so you don't have to work out what comes next on your own.

If a different type of support would be more appropriate, we'll talk through those options with you too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Trying to figure out if this program is right for your young person?  Select a question below to learn a little more.

Provisional Psychologists are registered health practitioners with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) who provide Psychology support under supervision.  This doesn't mean a supervisor is sitting in on your child's appointments. Rather, Luna meets regularly with experienced Psychologists to discuss her clinical work, reflect on her practice and receive guidance and support.

All psychologists complete a period of at least two years of intensively supervised practice, building their experience while working directly with clients. During this period, they are registered as Provisional Psychologists.

Think of it a little like the supervised training stage in medicine: they are already registered health practitioners providing care, while completing the supervised practice required before transitioning to general registration.

Luna is in her sixth and final year of Psychology training, completing this stage as part of her Master of Educational and Developmental Psychology at Monash University, specialising in working with children and young people.

Once a Provisional Psychologist has completed all of their training and registration requirements, they can transition to general registration and practise as a General Psychologist.

No. Your child does not need a diagnosis to access the program.

No. You can book directly with us without a referral.

If you do have a referral, Luna can coordinate with your referring doctor as part of your child’s care. Please note, however, that Medicare rebates are not available for this program, even if you have a referral.

Medicare rebates aren't available for appointments with Provisional Psychologists. Even if your child has a valid psychology referral or Mental Health Treatment Plan, Medicare will not provide a rebate for these appointments.
Appointments through the Low-Cost Psychology Program are $75 per session. While there is no Medicare rebate, the $75 fee is lower than the typical out-of-pocket cost of an appointment with a General Psychologist after a Medicare rebate has been applied.

Self-managed and plan-managed NDIS funding may be used where Psychology support is appropriate to your child's NDIS goals and funding arrangements.

That's okay. You don't need to work that out before you book. We'll start with a parent intake to understand what's happening and whether short-term support is likely to be appropriate.

If your child would benefit from more ongoing Psychology support, Luna will work with you and our broader Psychology team to plan the next step. Depending on what makes most sense for your child, they might complete some or all of their sessions with Luna before transitioning to another Psychologist, or we may recommend moving to an ongoing clinician sooner.

Any transition will be planned carefully and in consultation with you, with Luna and the receiving Psychologist working together to make the change as smooth as possible for your child.

If a different type of support would be more helpful, we’ll talk through those options with you too.

The program is designed to be short term. Towards the end of the block, we'll consider how things are going and what might be useful from there.

For some children, that may mean finishing Psychology for now and continuing to use what they've learned. For others, we may recommend further or different support.
